We are
asked this question often by men when they are trying
to choose the first six women to write. While each
man has his own view, we have learned that most men
base their decision on step-parent relationships that
they have experienced in our western culture. Russian
children are considerably different than children
raised in our culture, and often our men clients don't
know that.
So Inna has asked me
to write you about my experience with Svetlana, her
daughter, who accompanied Inna here to Eugene Oregon
in 1998 when Sveta was 13 years old.
I did not start looking for a woman with a child.
If the chemistry had been there with the any lady,
I would take what she came with, because it would
be part of her. However after having experienced the
last six years with Inna and Sveta, I have changed
my opinion. . .

We've placed a
series of pictures of Sveta on the right. They represent
points along Sveta's transition to America, and gives
us a chance to show you how great a child can become
given the opportunity. Russian children are often
very serious students and enjoy great success here.
Certainly Sveta is on the road to a remarkable life
anywhere she chooses in the world. You can click on
any of the pictures to enlarge them.
I have watched
Svetlana blossom from a somewhat shy girl who was
(and is) a wonderful artist, speaking a bit of broken
English to a young woman who has a great and large
heart, and who has graduated with high honors, fluent
in French, Spanish, Russian and English. She is taking
a year to prepare for the law school entrance examination,
and then will begin her work on her law degree.
Meanwhile, her trek through the school system in Eugene
has left corridors filled with murals, teachers who
fell in love with her kindness to other students and
her stoic determination to always do the work until
it was right, and she has left teachers that she has
loved, and friends through international clubs are
scattered throughout the world. Sveta has traveled
to Quebec and Paris to be immersed in French, traveled
to Mexico for the same reason, but Spanish of course,
and has continued throughout all of this to support
all the women in Sochi who hope for a life of opportunity
here in the west like the one Sveta has earned through
her hard work and great values.
I am immensely
proud of Svetlana, as if you couldn't tell, and every
day I thank the stars that I chose a woman with a
child.
